I usually get two guide books for every trip I take, Lonely Planet and DK (recently I started to try out Fodor's. I don't think I like it because its layout or format is kind of confusing. Maybe I'm not used to it yet). Compared to DK, LP is much more detailed in my opinion, but DK offers more photos. I felt compelled to write a review because I found DK is getting harder and harder to read due to its extremely small font, especially the description next to a photo or illustration). Maybe I'm getting old and need reading glasses (in fact my husband said he couldn't read anything on DK, lol). After reading it for a while, my eyes just start to hurt and I don't feel like reading it anymore. I don't know why the publisher make the font so small. I would imagine older people would have a hard time reading it. BTW, I'm 41-year-young :)Product details

I love this brand of book for whenever I travel, and this book for Peru was just as good. It gives a lot of details on the different places, and it was especially helpful when we went to Machu Picchu. I would recommend this to anyone going to Peru
There is no such thing as the perfect guidebook, but after 13 years of using them I've been most impressed by the Eyewitness series. I used this book in college when I went to Rome for 6 weeks, the London book when I lived in the UK for two years, and I bought the latest edition of the Rome and Florence books this year for my Italian honeymoon. I also brought along Rick Steves and Blue Guide to field-test them, but I used Eyewitness the most by a long shot. Rick Steves is very good for practical travel tips, but little else. Blue Guides are very good for historical/artistic/architectural detail, but they can be cumbersome and aren't the easiest to use while traveling. I made a point to notice which guides other travelers were using around Italy, and I saw Eyewitness guides far more than any other, carried in an amazing variety of language editions by travelers from all over the world.
Eyewitness guides are colorful, filled with photos, easy to carry, user-friendly, and they have great city maps. They provide a comprehensive overview that lets you decide what you want to see. They're also very durable and hold up extremely well in the rain. Foldout covers on front and back provide very handy bookmarks. They have their downsides too, of course the restaurant and hotel recommendations are hit and miss (as with most guidebooks), the books are not always updated annually, and the short Italian dictionary in the back is all but useless.
This book will guide you to the places you most want to see in and around Rome. It won't tell you a lot about them when you get there, but for many travelers it's more than enough. I like to have more historical, artistic and architectural detail handy when I travel to a place like Italy, so I also travel with the much more detailed Blue Guides. But, if you're only going to bring one guidebook, I recommend Eyewitness.
My husband loves this travel guide and says he thinks it is very helpful, so I am not going to give it a bad review. I love travel guides and normally buy at least two before a trip. I had never purchased an eyewitness guide before, and bought this one strictly on the basis of the great reviews. I have ADD and I simply can't read this guide. There are too many different things on each page- pictures and maps and timelines- I simply can't process it all. I read a lot- 3 or more books per week, but I find the format of this book very confusing. If you like pictures though, this is the one for you.

This guidebook is hard to pick up and read straight through, but as far as a reference when you are AT a site it was tremendously helpful. It shows you pictures of what its talking about- which is important because in Rome, hardly anything is labelled well in ANY language. I had this guide and another at the Roman Forum, and with the other one, i had no idea which bit of rubble the guide was referring to. This one was infinately better as a sort of self guided tour of everything- but again, much worse for the planning phase of the trip.
The indexes are so inadequate that the book is only minimally useful. Why on earth is it too difficult to do them well? I am required to search and look for cross indices and find after standing on the street looking for references to what I am looking for and finally then find only the most minimal information on what I am looking at? I found the guides far more frustrating than useful. I would not buy these guides again when I travel.
Great Pictures. Information seemed dated.
Large heavy book. Better information available in the Fodors book which is a pound less. The pictures are beautiful and this would make a good coffee table or bookcase book, but not a good book to travel with. I couldn't find operating hours quickly for attractions. It annoyed me that I could not find the info in a logical place.
I really like eyewitness travel guides. I got the same book when I went to Rome 15 years ago. I am using it again on this trip. One thing I did notice, that in 15 years my eyesight has declined. And it's very difficult to read the small print. Oh well, maybe one of my younger travel companions will be able to read it for us.
Hey, Eyewitness! If you read this, please give us versions. Makes it much easier to travel with your guides. That way we don't have to lug around these heavy (1.5lb) books. Then I could also adjust the text size. (This is why this guide loses 1 star in my review)
