Why do people write reviews when they haven't read the book? Good god! I read this many, many, MANY years ago. If you can find a copy, grab it. It's not nearly as good as "The Unforgiven", but it's a wonderful gothic novel nonetheless, by a mostly forgotten author.
With a similarly spooky theme, and nice, fluid writing style, this promised to be a great read since Macardle's ghost story "the Uninvited" is a particular favorite of mine.
Unfortunately, this novel is a real let down. The story concerns a woman who seems to have the gift of pre-cognition, but sees things that aren't always pleasant. This lead character acts so preposterously that I lost all patience with her and Macardle. It's okay if you don't use her previous book as a standard.
Disappointing! This book- first published in 1946- takes place in the Irish countryside. A woman begins to see a series of visions - and in the final vision, her daughter is murdered. I kept waiting for the action and the tension to begin, but unfortunately this book plodded along without ever picking up speed. Its very easy to figure out who the attempted murderer is. Actually, the most interesting part of the book was the forward- in which the author - Dorothy MacArdle- says the book is based on true events.
I have not had a chance to read this book yet; but I have read the uninvited. If the Unforseen is as well done, it will be a page turner. The book arrived in excellent condition. The Uninvited was out of print for a long time and so was the Unforeseen. I feel honored to have these two beautiful hardback editions in my library.
the movie with ray mayland, ruth hussey and gail russel was one of my all time movie and always wondered if the book is as good...well its on par with the movie. great suspense from cover to cover
