On the run to save her baby.

A pregnant cyborg and a teenage boy fight against intergalactic governments to protect the unborn in this novel from a Christy Award-nominated author.

Why is Zain pregnant? She belongs to the Hive, a collective of cyborgs who choose to live apart from the rest of human society. At times, the Hive rent out some of their females to produce tailor-made children for paying couples. But Zain is an engineer, not a breeder. When she finds herself separated from the Hive, she decides to find the person who she thinks ordered the baby. Surely they'll help her find her way home.

Matthew "Scorn" Nelson has spent the better part of his teenage years cracking computer systems, causing mischief and havoc wherever he can. But the night of his greatest triumph turned into a painful memory, one he wants to erase. But that night was also his first step on a road to faith. When Zain arrives on his doorstep, Scorn is horrified. What's he supposed to do with a pregnant teenage cyborg?

Unfortunately, he'll have to answer that question on the run. Zain's people want to reclaim her and terminate her pregnancy. And both the Ministrix and the Praesidium, two intergalactic governments in a constant state of cold war, want Zain's baby for their own reasons. Will their enemies run them down? Or will Zain find a new Hive for both her and her child?

I was part of the Launch Team for this book and received an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) for consideration and honest review. I already reviewed it on Goodreads and wanted to post here. I still stand by my 5-Star rating for this novel. In fact, I BOUGHT the Kindle version just to have that format too. Is the story perfect... no. Is it intriguing, well-developed, and full of characters I want to read about more... YES. Is is able to take me into the realm where these characters dwell and action abounds... DEFINITELY! THE HIVE has all the elements of Sci-Fi mixed with Faith and an AMAZING visual representation of computer programming that reminded me of my beloved days of Basic and beginning C+ at University of Dayton in 1990. That one aspect of many created the reason for my 5-Stars. If a book can translate me into the setting and make me care about the characters, it will be given a high rating by me even if no one else understands my reasoning. Like I posted on Christopher Stasheff's book THE WARLOCK IN SPITE OF HIMSELF recently, I have a "Highly Elevated Ability to Suspend Disbelief" but I also want something intelligent and character-driven. I cannot wait for Book 2 of THE HIVE series! I LOVED Mr. Otte's FAILSTATE series and THE HIVE has now joined that rank. I have found that books by Enclave Publishing are VERY worth the read. I already began another series by Morgan L. Busse published by Enclave that I will put up reviews for as well. I write my own Christian Fantasy series that has Japanese Anime fighting flavor, but I read A LOT and will support other writers if they help me journey to other places mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. THE HIVE did just that! Thanks Mr. John from Tonja Klein - TK ^___~ www.eirinth.com

The Hive edition by John W Otte Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

I really enjoy this book. It holds your attention and makes you want to keep reading. The characters are interesting and bold. A great read.
John has now officially departed from the YA world and ventured into full speculative - and it's a great thing.

I've enjoyed all of his books, and especially enjoyed his taking the next step up with Hive.

Keep it real in outer space, John. I want to read more.
Another great read by John Otte ~ I have been drawn into every "out of this world" tale he has spun and "The Hive" is no exception. I love the way he is able to weave familiar problems into alien worlds. He deals with an unplanned teenage pregnancy with elan' I don't want to spoil the story, but I can certainly say that our heroine, a teenage Cyborg; is another character that John Otte develops so well in the story that I feel I know her. The ending is completely satisfying too.....but I can't say more. Read this book!
There was so much to love about this book. Zain and Matthew are interesting characters. Zain is a cyborg and a pregnant teen. She's also a mechanic. Matthew is a average Joe high school student who happens to be a master hacker. He's not overly likable at first, which actually makes him more endearing as the story progresses.
There's a lot of action and the story is well-paced. The end was a bit rushed but satisfying.
Sci-fi is not a genre I am often drawn to, but I enjoy Otte's writing so I thought I would give this book a try. The first two pages I was a tad intimidated and thought I might need a sci-fi-English translator. ;) However once I pushed through, I really got into the story. I enjoyed Otte's vivid descriptions and an engaging plot line that held my interest til the end and kept me up way too late the last two nights. Overall I enjoyed the character development and romantic tension in the story. Definitely worth reading!

I also appreciated how the spiritual/faith elements were woven into the story. I often cringe at fiction from Christian authors because the spiritual elements sometimes seem cheesy or a bit awkward or forced, but in The Hive, Otte incorporates them naturally and very creatively.

I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I follow John Otte as a writer since his great Failstate YA superhero series. I've heard him tease his "pregnant teenage cyborg novel" for a while, and the idea sounded very strange and intriguing, to say the least. So when The Hive came out this year, I had to check it out.

I wasn't disappointed. The Hive is science fiction with a lot of fun twists. The Hive is a collective group of cyborgs separate from normal society, but when engineering drone Zain is separated from the collective and realizes that she's pregnant, she seeks out a name she finds to try and find her way back to her people.

Meanwhile, a hacker is trying to reform but gets into a situation over his head, one that takes him on a journey across the galaxy and through his own immaturity.

John has created a unique universe which has some surprising connections to his prior sci-fi book Numb. The Hive kept the pages turning throughout the book with a fun journey by Zain getting out trouble, only to find herself and her companions in deeper with each twist. The characters are interesting and the plot zips along like a healthy hyperdrive.

If you like science fiction, then John Otte is an author to watch, and The Hive is an enjoyable book to pick up.
